MR. DILIP KHATAU HONOURED WITH THE LEGEND AWARD!

TCF's Chairman and Founder Mr. Dilip Khatau was honoured with the Legends Award at the East India Travel Awards held in Guwahati on 26th July 2017 for his exemplary contribution to travel & tourism and wildlife conservation work. Mr. Khatau is now one of very few in India to be part of The Gallery of Legends of the India Travel Awards! TCF heartily congratulates Mr. Khatau on this occasion.

GOVERNMENT OF GUJARAT TAKES IMPORTANT STEPS TOWARDS GREAT INDIAN BUSTARD CONSERVATION

Following TCF’s appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to support the conservation of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) in Kutch, Gujarat, promising steps have been taken by the Government of Gujarat to protect the remaining few individuals of this critically endangered species. Two massive networks of power lines for a Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) substation adjoining GIB habitat threaten the GIBs here through death by collision - a manner in which GIBs have been lost in the past, and that India can no longer afford. In an encouraging decision, the Collector of Kutch issued an order to GETCO and the company Suzlon to have all high-tension transmission lines passing across GIB habitat laid underground within ten days of receiving notice. For this, TCF is most grateful to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, the Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Collector of Kutch.

FLOOD RELIEF AT KAZIRANGA TIGER RESERVE

As the annual floods ravage Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, TCF's team including 14 volunteers including local village youth, villagers associated with TCF’s conflict mitigation ‘Human-Elephant Project,’ PhD scholars from Guwahati University and local school teachers were involved in the following activities - assisting the park authorities in issuing time cards to vehicles plying NH37 to minimize wildlife casualties from road accidents, ferrying injured wildlife to the CWRC Rescue Centre, and actively patrolling villages to ensure that vulnerable wildlife fleeing the flood and near human settlements are not poached. TCF also spread awareness, advising well-meaning villagers against restraining herbivores near their homes in an attempt to assist them, since the panicked animals could die from ‘capture myopathy’. The two Highlands constructed by TCF with support from Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation and Dharamsi Morarji Chemicals Co. Ltd. have proved to be a much-needed refuge for local communites and livestock in villages Diphloopathar and Japoripathar in Kaziranga

TRAINING LIVESTOCK INSPECTORS IN CATTLE-INJURY TREATMENT

Among local communities in Central India, one of the primary sources of antagonism towards big cats like tigers and leopards is the injury of livestock by these carnivores, the wounds from which are often fatal if left unattended. Mitigating this conflict is crucial to tiger conservation and enlisting local support towards this cause. TCF therefore conducted a seven-day training workshop for Livestock Inspectors (LIs) at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in collaboration with the Forest Department, under which four LIs were trained to promptly treat grievously injured livestock, as well as to create awareness among and gather relevant information from villagers. The trained LIs now work with the Forest Department. The overall goal of the project is to ensure the long-term conservation of tiger in Bandhavgarh landscape by addressing the human-tiger conflict, developing a network of informers and spreading awareness among the local communities in the buffer zone of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

BIODIVERSITY ASSESSMENT AT RAMNAGAR FOREST DIVISION

As part of a biodiversity assessment at Ramnagar Forest Division - part of the Terai-Arc landscape in Uttarakhand - TCF hs been collecting data from varied locations on plants, mammals, avifauna and herpetofauna through various scientific sampling methods, tools and analysis. TCF is also using Remote sensing and GIS techniques to map various habitat in Ramnagar Forest Division.

NATURE-GUIDE TRAINING AT KANHA TIGER RESERVE

In August,TCF collaborated with Kanha Tiger Reserve and the Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board to conduct a week-long capacity building and skill development programme for over 130 nature guides in Kanha Tiger Reserve. Sessions on natural history, communication and English speaking, responsible ecotourism were the highlights of this interactive training module. TCF is grateful to Mr. Sanjay Shukla (IFS), Field Director, Kanha Tiger Reserve for this opportunity.

SUSTAINABLE SUBSTITUTE FOR HOUSEHOLD BIO-FENCING IN KANHA TIGER RESERVE

Residents of village Sarasdol in Kanha Tiger Reserve depend on as many as 50,000 saplings of trees like Tendu, Jamun, Sal and Amla annually to ‘bio-fence’ their household backyards – an activity that consistently degrades patches of important tiger habitat. Supported by the Born Free Foundation, TCF and the villagers have collaborated to replace the bio-fences with chain-link fencing, a more durable and sustainable option that will last at least 15 years before it needs to be replaced, giving the degraded forest on the hillock (the sapling source) a sufficient regeneration period. An effective length of 4000 meters of chain-link fencing has been installed till date.

HABITAT REVIVAL THROUGH PLANTATION OF NATIVE TREE SAPLINGS AT CORBETT

Amgarhi nullah in Ramnagar Forest Division has become overrun with the exotic weed Lantana camara, due to which the native vegetation in this area is fast diminishing. To revive the natural vegetation growth and to check Lantana invasion, TCF began a plantation programme to plant 500 native tree species on 6000 sq. feet area of the nullah. Native tree species are optimally adapted to the local environment, making them less susceptible to diseases, pests, stress and other factors related to the elements. The medicinal and economic value of these species is also well-known to the local community.

INTERNATIONAL TIGER DAY WITH TCF

Presentations, art and essay competitions, rangoli competition, skits and movies screenings formed part of the celebrations and awareness programmes TCF conducted with local communities and schools for International Tiger Day on July 29, 2017 across its divisions as well as at Sahyadri Tiger Reserve at Maharashtra.
