CHAMOMILE CULTIVATION TO MITIGATE HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT IN CORBETT TIGER RESERVE

A successful Chamomile cultivation in a crop field at Mankanthpur village, Corbett Tiger Reserve remains entirely untouched by crop-raiding wild herbivores. A camera trap here captured a herd of spotted deer approaching the field in the hope of a grazing opportunity, and leaving shortly after sensing the unpalatability of the crop.
SOLAR FENCING TO MITIGATE HUMAN-ELEPHANT CONFLICT IN KAZIRANGA

Modelled on a prior successful model to mitigate crop-raiding by wild elephants in Kaziranga, an 8 km long community-managed solar fence has been constructed by TCF to protect farms in Silghat in the Nagaon Forest Division neighbouring Kaziranga Tiger Reserve in collaboration with the Forest Department and local community. 300 cement posts, contributed to by the local panchayat and 700 bamboo posts were erected for this purpose. The project ensures damage-free crops and unhindered elephant movement.

LIVESTOCK FARMER EDUCATION INITIATIVE AT KAZIRANGA

IRON POLES REPLACE TRADITIONAL WOODEN STRUCTURES IN CORBETT TIGER RESERVE

The rural community around Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) traditionally dries out crop-straw or grass over the year to produce fodder for their cattle. To prevent decay from moisture, they store it by heaping it into a ‘hump’ centred on a wooden pole called soola or loota, made by cutting down an entire tree. Many trees are felled periodically to replace the old, ruined poles. To reduce this tree dependence, TCF has, on a pilot scale, provided 46 residents from 3 villages in CTR’s North Zone with iron poles to replace the wooden ones, owing to its durability and sustainability.

LIVESTOCK VACCINATION CAMPS AT KUTCH

In collaboration with the Gujarat Forest Department, Kutch West Division, TCF Kutch organized a series of vaccination camps, free of charge, for the cattle and livestock in 14 different villages in Abdasa taluka. In March, 5742 cattle and livestock were vaccinated agasint Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Immunization drives such as these protect wild ungulates in the Kutch landscape such as Chinkara and Nilgai that share habitat with domestic livestock from contracting disease.
