FLOOD RELIEF IN KAZIRANGA

With the devastation in Kaziranga Tiger Reserve due to the annual monsoon floods, TCF has been working round the clock, bringing flood relief to its human and wild inhabitants. TCF has been engaged in patrolling the NH 37, providing safe passage for wildlife escaping inundated habitat, deploying its veterinary team to attend to livestock and human beings injured by distressed wildlife, rescuing stranded villagers using our boat, salvaging grain stores, ferrying sick and injured victims to nearby health centres and assisting the forest department in rescuing and releasing injured wildlife. TCF has rescued and returned 59 Hog Deer to the wild, in addition to a dozen Hog Deer handed over to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC). Volunteers have assisted TCF in all its flood relief work, including distributing snacks, fruits, candles and matchboxes to temporary shelters. The highland built by TCF in 2015 was extremely useful as a refuge for villagers and their livestock from the floods.  TCF's appeal letter requests robust support in the form of donations towards its flood relief and preparatory work

ENHANCING HABITAT IN TIGER CORRIDORS

TCF Bandhavgarh has collaborated with the Forest Department on a reforestation initiative, ‘Project Hariyali’, aimed at enhancing the forest habitat of the Bandhavgarh-Sanjay Dubri tiger corridor. Plantation of 3000 saplings of local species was carried out on a five-hectare plot of degraded forest land in the Patarhatta beat of North Shahdol Forest Division located in the Bandhavgarh-Sanjay Dubri tiger corridor.

SUPPORTING ECO DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE EFFORTS IN KAZIRANGA
TCF Kaziranga distributed shoes and raincoats to 166 members of Eco Development Committees (EDCs) representing 35 villages from Agoratoli, Kohora, Bagori and Burapahar ranges of Kaziranga National Park. EDCs, comprising around five members from the local community, act as the eyes and ears of the Forest Department of a protected area, helping them in patrolling during floods, keeping an eye out and informing forest authorities about poaching and suspicious activity, and implementing sustainable development projects like vermiculture, organic farming and fisheries in their villages. EDC members work under harsh conditions with inadequate resources. TCF aims to strengthen their patrolling and flood relief capacity while appreciating their hard work towards conservation.
INTERIM RELIEF SCHEME NOW AT KANHA
TCF and WWF-India expand their two-decade long collaboration - providing interim compensation to villagers who have lost their cattle to tigers and leopards - in the Corbett Landscape to Kanha Tiger Reserve. WWF-India has been providing interim compensation to villagers whose cattle have fallen prey to tigers and leopards. Although the villagers receive compensation from the forest department eventually, it is important to ensure that immediate monetary support is provided to pacify the wrath of the affected villagers and prevent retaliatory killings of tigers and leopards responsible for cattle kills. The project field staff verifies the genuineness of these kills and soon after, interim compensation is disbursed.
JIM CORBETT'S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
TCF- Corbett celebrated the 141st birthday of legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett on 25th July at Choti Haldwani, the village he established and lived in. The bust of Corbett was garlanded by Dr. H.S Bargali Deputy director TCF and Dr. Deepa Bisht, commemorating Corbett's works and services to the locals. TCF also donated 50 saplings of fodder tree species to the villagers. Present at this occasion were Mr. Sameer Sinha, Director, Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR), Dr. Saket Badola, Deputy Director, CTR and Dr. Harish Gularia from WWF.
SOLAR LIGHTS AND SMART STOVES FOR FOREST CHECK POSTS

TCF‬ distributed ‪solar‬-powered lights and energy-efficient smart stoves to 87 ‪forest‬ check posts in ‪‎Pench‬ Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh. All these check posts are situated inside dense forest areas and have no access to electricity. This intervention will greatly improve living conditions for the forest field staff at these posts.
TCF is grateful to Friends of Conservation, UK and Exodus Travels Ltd, UK for their support towards this work.

TCF has also distributed solar-lighting systems to ‪‎Ramnagar ‬Forest Division, adjacent to ‪Corbett‬ Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand and is excellent tiger habitat.

CELEBRATING GLOBAL TIGER DAY 2016

TCF celebrated Global Tiger Day on July 29, 2016 across its divisions, organizing competitions in drawing, elocution on the importance of tigers, essay writing and may other educational-cum-recreational activities for local school children. TCF Bandhavgarh also participated in a conference to garner support from Eco Development Committees for tiger conservation. The conference was graced by the presence of the Hon. Forest Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

EMERGENCY VETERINARY CARE AT KUTCH

Wildlife conservation requires the assistance and participation of local communities in programmes that mutually benefit wildlife and communities. TCF's veterinary care programme aims to do just this. KERC responded to a distress call from a farmer in Jhakau late at night, to save his buffalo which became severely ill from indigestion caused by a toxic reaction on consuming castor seeds. TCF's veterinary team promptly attended to the animal, saving it and ganing the villagers' appreciation. This incident is evidence that rapidly changing crop patterns are a serious threat to not only wildlife like the Great Indian Bustard, but also to domestic animals.
